Learning Upholstery
Do You Want To Learn Upholstery?
In learning upholstery (or any trade or skill) you first have to set your intention (to tell yourself that you WILL learn upholstery). It is all to easy to tell yourself "I don't have a teacher", OR "I don't know what to do", OR "No one will let me", OR any other excuse you might have. If you really want to learn, you will put aside all the reasons why you can't do it do it and you will do begin.
Getting Started in Upholstery
Acquiring Skills
As in any career, developing a quality of workmanship (known as skill) is of utmost importance. Skill doesn't come quickly or easily Here are a few tips to help you along the way. Let me say, don't try to make a living at upholstery while you are getting started. You should have a day-job that pays the bills. Doing upholstery should be your second job that you do after hours. It has been said that it takes 3-5 years to get a business to be profitable. If you are wanting to go into upholstery as a profession, I'd recommend that you take this long term view of gradually working into doing it, while keeping your paying job.

Pattern Matching
Types of Fabric Pattern Matching
Upholstery fabrics come in a variety of patterns and designs, such as plain, all over designs, stripes, plaids, bouquet designs, geometric, random, continuous stems, or even a mixture of several of these. Many upholstery materials do not require any matching, while others won't look good if they aren't matched. Still other fabric patterns can look good matched or unmatched. Whether the upholsterer matches those fabrics will depend upon the client's preferences. The amount of matching done by the upholsterer will depend upon the upholsterer's skill level (For more information about upholsterer types, click here ), the size and type of the actual pattern, the shape and dimensions of the furniture, the client's preferences, and the costs involved. In some cases, pattern matching can add considerable yardage and extra labor costs to the upholstery job.
Choosing A Business Name
When trying to decide upon a name, I'd like to give my thoughts about how names fit on signs and domain names. If you are putting a name on a sign, the more words you have in the main part of the name, the smaller the letters will have to be. I'm going to be a little bit overly rediculous, just do show a point. And, so that we don't get distracted by the name, for this example, I'm going use a completely different name.
Writing Good Ads
Writing an Effective Ad For Your Business
(Feel free to share some ideas to make this a better article.) Beginning the Writing Process Writing a good ad takes a lot of thought and work. For me, I often have to do a lot of thinking and writing to figure out what I want to write. I have to ask myself, "What am I trying to say?" I may write an ad a dozen or two dozen different ways, tring different words, different layouts, all trying to find what seems right to me.
Advertising in the Yellow Pages
A lot of upholsterers don't advertise in the yellow pages, but only have a one line listing. I can certainly relate to having struggles with advertising in the phone books. However, I've changed the way that I do my advertising with them. I give the phone directory companies my ads laid out exactly as I want them.
Furniture Upholstery Pricing
Before give a client a phone quote, I usually ask some questions to help me determine the style, age, and condition of the furniture.Asking The Client Details Now, as far about about how I price. When someone calls me, I usually just give a quick "ball park" phone quote. To give this, I usually ask the client some details, such as:
Repairing a Convertible Top
Problem: Small Slit in Convertible Top
Because I'm primarily a furniture upholsterer and don't do much work with automobiles, I normally wouldn't even think about fixing a convertible top. However, a friend of mine brought a convertible car (a 1982 Mercedes convertible owned by one of his friends) that has a rip in the convertible. When he first called up, from his description, (in my ignorance) I had thought that it was something that I might be able to just hand sew up. He said that the owner had recently purchased the car recently (and because of the rip she may have gotten a good deal on the car) and she was just looking for something that wouldn't cost very much. she didn't want to put a lot of money into the repair. She just wants something that will seal it and stop any water from leaking through the rip. The Car is a 1982 Mercedes Convertible
